Distribution Reviews - This section contains links to Linux distribution reviews in the electronic media throughout the Web.

Debian - Debian is our favorite of the distributions. Being Technical people, we prefer having a base install that requires us to choose the packages we install, rather than installing everything under the sun and us having to rip out what we didn't want. Debian also has the most 'packages' available for it -- a full distribution comprises 6 CDs with over 11000 software packages ready to be installed.

Knoppix, LiveCD - KNOPPIX is a bootable CD with a collection of GNU/Linux software, automatic hardware detection, and support for many graphics cards, sound cards, SCSI and USB devices and other peripherals. KNOPPIX can be used as a Linux demo, educational CD, rescue system, or adapted and used as a platform for commercial software product demos. It is not necessary to install anything on a hard disk. Due to on-the-fly decompression, the CD can have up to 2 GB of executable software installed on it.

Slackware - Slackware aims to be the most 'unix' compatible Linux distribution, and accomplishes this very well. Behind Debian in popularity but not in drive and devotion, Slackware has carved a niche in the marketplace for itself.

RedHat - Clearly the most popular distribution, RedHat has corporate backing, and quite a bit of funding behind it. Recent changes in their business philosophy and their move to Enterprise Solutions might bring with it more expensive server licensing and support contracts.

SuSE - SuSE has been around for quite a while and has quite a stronghold in Europe in terms of number of installed users. They have a growing user base and have partnered with IBM on a number of recent deals.

GenToo - GenToo sort of mirrored the FreeBSD Ports package management system. This requires one to download and compile every package that you want to install. Granted, a system adminstrator of Gentoo will have a much firmer grasp of Linux System Administration, it may not be as suitable for an office or home.

Mandrake - Mandrake is a friendly Linux Operating System which specializes in ease-of-use for both servers and the home/office. It is freely available in many languages throughout the world.
